Nash:the best result comes from everyone doing what"s best for himself and the group. What is the point of the state of nature. Need state to avoid a war of all against all. >be willing to play down your right of liberty. Natural liberty: liberty is not license, only free to what we"re allowed to do, law of nature governs us (life liberty property) Locke says we"re all god"s children, morally equal. Hobbes: absolute freedom, we can do whatever we want. Locke: we"re free to do what we have a right to do, respect other people"s rights. Law of nature is not in vain, so need enforcer. Some lack power to enforce law of nature -> locke: if states violates our rights, then state should be overthrown. Pity or compassion for the suffering of others. Solitary, no language, fears only pain and hunger. How change happens in state of nature: free will and (2) the capacity for self improvement.
