Political Science 1020E Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Freedom Party Of Austria, Pim Fortuyn, Neo-Fascism
Document Summary
Lecture 14 populism and the parties of the extreme right. *the point: populist extreme parties have recently surfaced in europe. Not protest parties: established bases of support, steady group of supporters in society, key issues: immigration, integration, focus on assimilation. Not catch-all parties (especially because they hold such strong positions on controversial views: outperforming neo-fascist parties, instead are parties of conviction - limits appeal (often hated by many) Reject principle of human equality: nativism, ethno-nationalism, less emphasis on jobs and resources, more on threat to national community and way of life, do not want to lose their character/traditions. When issues of immigration and national integration are prominent: people do not always see immigrants and refugees as a threat, so the key issues of immigration and national integration have to matter at the time. When mainstream parties ignore or mismanage these^ issues.
