o Nation:

• A sense of comradeship and relative equality that can
actuallycounter class distinction
▪ Commitment to political autonomy, usually statehood
• A nation wants autonomy and independence
o Patriotism
▪ Commitment to the nation
o Nationalism
▪ Sense of integrity and value of national community
▪ Commitment to the nation’s political aspirations
o National Identity: based on political aspirations
▪ Attaching yourself to a country and its political visions
o Nation-state: state territory matches boundaries of national community
▪ This is rare (France, Italy, Japan)
• These countries are almost homogeneous
▪ Most states are multi-national (Canada, Nigeria)
• Multiple nationalities are present in the country
• Ex. Canada, founded by English and French peoples, allowed
many more nationalities through immigration
o National self-determination: the principle supporting the creation of nation-states
