A new identity group: group sharing same civil, political, social identity: New social movement- development of distinctive community with history and identity. (gay becomes identity not just an act) class in terms of identity group- recognition for their differences on equal terms. No systematic relationship between a person"s sexual orientation and ones gender identity. Sexual orientation: central to identity as a person. Gender identity: sense of ones own gender- consistent with sex assigned at birth. Lgbti= lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex persons. Trans: range of gender identities including transgender persons- includes cross dressers. A currently contested term: queer: unnatural, odd now lgbt use it to refer to oneself sometimes.
