Destutt de tracy (1790"s): saw ideologies as a science of ideas (promoting rational inquiry into human nature) French revolution 1789: liberty, equality, and fraternity marks origins of liberalism, conservatism, and socialism. Napoleon bonaparte: turned against ideologies movement to rational, impartial inquiry to sciences of society. Now: 2014- ideology: social/political worldviews- set of ideas that shape how people act. Ideology 4 functions: 1) explanation 2) evaluation 3) orientation 4) Make sense of world events (what causes what)
