Dual character of the state: relating to society and international level. But states are hanging on, in part by yielding some sovereignty to broader organizations. States are often seen as a solution to: Disorder and con ict (ex: civil wars), which requires state formation. State based rules crucial for economic development, overcome corruption and build up state sponsored institutions. Eradicating problems of corruption, which requires well institutionalized states (to establish a stronger civil administration that operates according to solidi ed rules) Minimal state: a liberal construct, provide essential public goods, the nightwatchman state. Social democratic state: gets involved in society, concerned with redistribution of wealth and creation of equality through enhancing social justice, but do not merely try to redistribute wealth as they understand that economic growth is essential. Therefore they try to develop economic strength, and usually they intersect with a developmental emphasis.
