Comes from the greek root words an + archos meaning without rulers , to us this means no political authority. An anarchist is someone who believes we would be better off without government. Anarchists believe that cooperation is possible without coercion, we can have the bene ts of social cooperation without pledging to a state, the state is an unnecessary evil. Hobbes reply to anarchism: it would be a world characterized by fear, suspicion, and competition which would overwhelm any chance for cooperation. Not everyone is bad, it simply takes a few bad apples to ruin everything. Anarchist responses: human beings are naturally good, social cooperation is possible without coercion. This leaves us with the options of con ict upon disagreement or a set of rules, namely the state. N - the state is the only alternative to the state of nature.
