Anarchists believe that cooperation is possible without coercion, we can have the bene ts of social cooperation without pledging to a state, the state is an unnecessary evil. Hobbes reply to anarchism: it would be a world characterized by fear, suspicion, and competition which would overwhelm any chance for cooperation. Not everyone is bad, it simply takes a few bad apples to ruin everything. Anarchist responses: human beings are naturally good, social cooperation is possible without coercion. This leaves us with the options of con ict upon disagreement or a set of rules, namely the state. N - the state is the only alternative to the state of nature.
