Created in 1938 – led by Martin Dies

INVESTIGATE FDR’S NEW DEAL – ORIGINAL PURPOSE
oSocialist? Affecting American capitalism?
Fear of foreign doctrines
all about politics – way for republicans to go after FDR
WW2 breaks out – HUAC shelved (Russia on the side of the allies)
HUAC – comes back with a vengeance, and changes its focus
1947 – HOLLYWOOD
o1946 – massive wave of labour strikes, hit Hollywood now
unions – un-American – communistic, socialistic
oanti-Semitism – fear that the Hollywood studios are pro-Jewish, and
that’s un-American
ocongress is beginning to recognize how powerful film is, and there
is a fear of subliminal messages that are aiding and abetting the
communist agenda
o“IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE” – went after the banks, had their own
FBI file
o“Mission to Moscow” 1943
based on a book
celebrated Stalin and the Russia war efforts in beginning to
turn the war and defeat Hitler
1947 – go back and look at this film
oHEARINGS
Going after people who were “flirting” with communism

Failure of capitalism – people losing their jobs
because of the failure of banks and systems – African
Americans being the first – beginning to look quite
attractive to those fed up with communist system
Russia/Stalin is the only country standing up to
Fascism – only one engaged in trying to fight
Mussolini and Hitler
Completely divide Hollywood
Those who were considered “friendly witnesses” –
men and women who volunteered to testify about the
dangers of communism
Walt Disney, Ronald Reagan, Gary Cooper
oWhy did they testify?
True believers that Hollywood and
America was under attack, testifying out
of fear – had to show they were patriotic
in hopes of keeping their jobs, testifying
out of revenge to go after enemies
oTHE HOLLYWOOD TEN
Unfriendly witnesses
Initially 11 – one guy fled to Mexico
All ten men were directors, producers, and writers
Most of them had foreign, immigrant names – ethnic element
1st amendment defense – “Are you now, or have you ever
been, a member of the Communist Party” – response to the
question – You can’t ask me this, or ask me about my
political stance or affiliations
RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH AND RIGHT TO
ASSEMBLE WITH WHOEVER THEY WANTED
HOWEVER – THIS IS NOT A LEGAL OR CRIMINAL TRIAL
– POLITICAL TRIAL PUT ON BY CONGRESS
Doesn’t need to follow the letter of the law – all a
show to demonstrate that Congress is trying to root
out Communism
All found guilty – Contempt of Congress
Massive fine, jail time, etc.
1950 – Joseph McCarthy comes back, trials resurface
lots of people naming names
Supreme Court – ruled that HUAC had every right to actually issue out
punishments and trials, etc.
oPunishment – BLACKLISTED – no one would hire them, losing
their livelihood, suicide rates go up, etc.
oPeople began to create things under an alias
ELIA KAZAN AND “ON THE WATERFRONT”, 1954
Elia Kazan – playwright and director, discovers Marlon Brando
oBorn in Turkey, moves to US when he was young
Overrun by the Soviet Union – living under communist
influence
1952 – willingly testifies
