Unil 1960s, focus was on nature conservaion: conservaion movement creaion of naional parks, yellowstone and banf pre 1900, emphasis to preserve for future generaions not necessarily for wildlife and habitats. Beginning in 1960s, issues such as overpopulaion, polluion, and dangers of industrial and agricultural chemicals became salient: silent spring, populaion bomb, limits to growth. Dangers of ddt, natures vulnerability to humanity, government regulaions were needed as points of silent spring by carson. Populaion growth not enough food, producive capacity to maintain populaion growth. Proven wrong because of tremendous advances in technology and agriculture: large-scale environmental catastrophes. Oil spills, beaches ruined, marine animals killed, etc. Burning rivers polluion in rivers caused cleveland river to catch ire. Great lakes are dead nitrogen levels too high, things cannot thrive: emphasis on quality of life. Insituionalizaion has helped keep environmental issues on the agenda.
