Why study ir theory: theory: set of assumptions, organize facts - theories are lenses on global events, lenses: some things come into view, some disappear from view, theory is not separate from action! policy is based on theory! Robert cox"s classi cation of ir theory: theories are always, for someone, for some purpose, by someone - who is putting it forward (nig) Nig narain: problem solving theory - manage, dominant, critical theory - change, challengers. Objectivity: theorist and observed are separate, knowledge is unbiased, judgement = analysis. Perspectives: theorist and observed are connected, knowledge is ideological and biased, judgement = values, norms, contexts. As it is conservative policy-relevant analysis = some actor can use it to act. Change world: ought to be = deep change of exiting order radical emancipation: free and better = state and non-sate actors use to improve. Normative issues equally or more important - values, freedom dominant theories relaism, neo-realism, neo- liberalism, constructivism.
