Met socrates: leading philosopher of the time, seen as dangerous because he is not as out there as the critics, tried by athens. Establishes the academy after the death of socrates. Influenced as well by pythagoras: radical vegetarian, obsessed with numbers, the idea of harmony reflected in music. Resulted in communal ownership of property: friendship (pythagoras known as the creator of friendship) Visited north africa, egypt, sicily: political consultant in sicily. No writings survived from socrates: plato therefore is able to define socrates, much more appealing descriptions of socrates. Xenophon wrote account of military expedition to persia. Plato wrote a number of texts: political: the republic, the laws, allow some luxuries, the feverish city, the laws defines a reachable and realistic city. Nature of the polity: urbanized/centered on city, loyalty to place, not person, head of polis probably agathos, but not necessarily related, smallish, self-contained.
