Humans are selfish and stupid: worthy of both pity and contempt. Worthy of compassion/beyond pity: searching for fortune and luck (fortuna) Similar to a hurricane that cannot be stopped but rather prepared for: admires human intelligence, foresight, resolve, most people need religion to make themselves better otherwise they tend to be very selfish, virtue (virtu) Beastlier manlier side as opposed to old-school. Need to be courageous and immoral when needed. Morality is used personally and in public in different ways. Is a movement to being self-sacrificing and pushes us away from animals. With difficulty due to gender norms: virtue of a people/a community. Building individual virtue leads to a communal virtue that is strong and powerful. A learning to desire the common good. Moves from a mob into an organized group with the willingness to sacrifice for the greater good. Political institutions: believes heavily in the need for them, to protect us from our stupidity and selfishness.
