Machiavelli: human nature, good life, and political institutions. Needed a liberal arts education: came from a well of family. He had a republican preference believed that it was the best political institution. Florence was conquered by france and they imposed the medici prince: lost his job when the country was captured and was jailed/tortured. He wrote the prince for the medici"s: he favours the principalities over all in the prince. Was interested in the roman republic and wanted to learn about what made the roman republic such a success. Writes a book on the history of florence. Machiavelli did not see the world changing fast enough. He is realistic with how people are like. People like liberty and freedom they do not like people telling them what to do: self-interested and self-regarding. Learn to respect the law, reduce selfishness, place societies interest over personal interest: mob can be transformed into civil society.
