Bill referred to a committee: where most of the work for the bill is done, committee is where bills go to die. Hearings and mark up sessions: add, remove, reword things. Committee reports the bill: are usually odd numbers of people, majority party has the majority of any committee, can be sent to multiple committees. In the senate, you"re going to need 60 votes to stop a filibuster: cloture. The president may: sign it = law, veto it = it returns to house of origin, override with a two thirds vote from both houses or ignore it. 115th congress: jan 3 2017 2019, there are 106 women in congress but a few are delegates (20%, there are 49 african americans serving in congress (10%) Members of congress are older, wealthier and better educated then the general public: relatively few women and members of minority groups, there is a disproportionate number of lawyers in both houses of congress.
