Structured interviews are used because they produce standardization in the asking of questions and recording of answers. Variation is expected should be attributable to the characteristics being measured and not the interview process (true or real variation) Variation related to interviewer or process is variability due to error. Goal is to allow replies to be aggregated reliably need replies in response to identical cues. Mistakes in entering data into a computer file. Biases caused by innate characteristics of interviewee or interviewer. Measured variation = true variation + variation due to error. Intra-interviewer variability (one interviewer) interviewer is not consistent in asking questions or recording answers (either with same respondent or a different one) Inter-interviewer variability when multiple interviewers are used, when they are not consistent. Reduces the chance of variation due to error. Enhances the accuracy and ease of data processing because of the use of closed or fixed choice questions.
