Political Science 3324F/G Lecture 2: Week 2
Document Summary
Poor arguments that you will never use again: straw man. Making the opponents argument weakening it and simplifying it, to make it easy to tear down. Attack on somebody as an individual as opposed to their line of argumentation. Trying to debunk or advance an argument by saying there"s no evidence i"m wrong or no evidence that shows you"re right, so i must be right . (you can"t prove aliens exist, so they must not be real or you can"t prove they do exist, so they must be real: slippery slope. The extension of an argument that goes beyond the actual outcome. Making an issue appear as though there are only two options. Either you"re with us or you"re against us : red herring. Divert attention to something more simpli ed or current than the issue at hand. Distraction from the core of the argument. Very common when someone doesn"t want to talk about the real issue: to quoque.
