All rights are expensive (claims rights: welfare, healthcare) Moral/normative rights: based on the good/good live; can be expansive. If you do not fulfill your obligations, you will be punished in afterlife. Natural law: put in place by god, have duties to others. Locke: natural rights; we are created by god so we cannot harm ourselves/others because we are owned by god. Only right worth having is positive legal right. John locke: state of nature; humans are reasonable and are capable of self control/rule. Right to self presevation - never give that right up. We are born with rights and cannot be taken away. Establishing something as a right pushes itself past other considerations. The weak can use to claim things against the strong. Method of dealing with clashes of society. Makes life easier because we know our rights. To say every human has equal dignity.
