Parents were a combo of french and scottish. Father was a good business man (but died while trudeau was in his teens) Conscripted during ww2; expelled b/c lack of discipline. Becomes a public intellectual - debates policies and politics. Quebec had remained frozen in time - routine and traditional. Wanted to push society forward to catch up. Most french canadians of his age became lawyers - business education was not popular. Duplessis was a target for most of the things that were wrong with. He was in office for a long time - little opposition. Demonstrated antidemocratic brutality of quebec under quebec premier, maurice duplessis premier, maurice duplessis. Enabled police to lock up any premise they suspected communist or radical meetings were taking place (didn"t need any cause) Tried to challenge the police and their authority - he was a figure. Point in thinking that there was something fundamentally wrong w/ the state.
