Most viruses are evolved to target a certain species, so when they live in groups, they"re easier to target. Increased risk of infanticide: killing someone else"s child in order to be able to mate with their partner. Benefits outweigh the costs: reduction in predator pressure improved detection/ vigilance: more eyes and ears to detect an approaching predator. Dilution/ selfish herd: less chance of you as an individual getting caught individuals within a population attempt to reduce their predation risk by putting other members of the same species between themselves and predators.
