Jung - collective unconscious: sleeping/dreaming, emotional unconscious - subliminal stimuli. Consciousness is not an all or nothing phenomenon there are different levels of awareness. Self-reflective: central to our sense of self. Selective attention: unlimited possibilities, focus on some stimuli at the expense of missing others, this shapes our reality. Dynamic - drift in and out of different states (day dreaming/deep in thought) Conscious mind: thoughts, perception of mental events in our awareness. Preconscious mind: outside of current awareness but easily recalled. Unconscious mind: normally can"t be brought into awareness. Like an iceberg, the largest part is underwater. Conscious and preconscious have: ego and superego. Unconscious: kept out of consciousness because anxiety provoking, could slip through in dreams - hypothesis. Id - instinctive sexual & aggressive drives: unconscious. Ego - mediating between id and superego: conscious & preconscious.
