Document Summary
140 female university students participated in this research. Prior to the testing, the students were asked not to apply any makeup. Upon arrival, they completed a quick survey, then had pictures of their (neutral expression) faces taken in high resolution. After questioning the participants, ten female raters first rated each photo based on how s(cid:373)ooth ea(cid:272)h wo(cid:373)a(cid:374)"s ski(cid:374) appeared, how (cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:455) (cid:271)le(cid:373)ishes ea(cid:272)h wo(cid:373)a(cid:374) had, how masculine each woman looked, how feminine each woman looked. These ratings were average to create an index of masculine facial appearance. Independent variable: rati(cid:374)g of wo(cid:373)a(cid:374)"s fa(cid:272)e o(cid:374) i(cid:374)de(cid:454) of (cid:373)as(cid:272)uli(cid:374)e fa(cid:272)ial appeara(cid:374)(cid:272)e. Dependent variable: ratings by men on a 7-point scale. Positive correlations were found between the self-reported soi scores of the women and facial masculinity index. This is probably because women who produce more testosterone are associated with increased sexual desire and a less restricted sociosexual orientation.
