At any given time, 1 in 5 canadians suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. Half of all americans between 14-54 will experience a psych disorder sometime in their lives. 1 adolescent commits suicide every 90 seconds in north america (90% of those diagnosed mentally ill) North americans will have substance abuse disorder sometime in lifetime. Psychological disorders account for over 15% of the financial burden of illness. 3rd criterion is society"s judgments of the deviance: behaviour violates social norms: personal and social judgments of behavior enter into considerations of what is abnormal. Abnormal behaviour: behaviour that is personally distressing, personally dysfunctional and/or culturally deviant that other people judge it to be maladaptive. Belief that abnormal behaviour is caused by supernatural forces goes back to ancient chinese, egyptians, hebrews all of whom attributed deviance to the work of the devil. In many cases this treatment successfully eliminated abnormal behaviour by killing the patient.
