Personality traits: a durable disposition to behave in certain ways across a number of situations, accounts for consistency and distinctiveness. A good personality theory : explains consistency across situations, but also differences, explains individual differences, stimulates subsequent research. Biological theories of personality development: genetic contribution to personality, determined with twin studies, estimated that personality traits are about 50% heritable. Cattell"s 16 factors of personality: developed profiles for individuals and distinct groups, found 16 basic behaviour clusters. Plot a profile indicating what they are most likely to be like. Higher order trait theory: hans eysenck: two traits on a continuum making up our personality: introversion-extroversion and stability-instability. Two traits are uncorrelated: emotional stable vs. unstable. Introverted vs. extroverted: later added psychoticism vs. lack of psychoticism. Psychoticism is creativity, tendency towards nonconformity, impulsivity and social deviance.
