Suicide
- Devastating effects on survivors (*some develop PTSD)
- More women than men attempt suicide
- More men than women die by suicide (men choose more lethal methods)
- Death by suicide is 5x more likely than death by homicide
- Myths about Suicide:
- People attempt suicide just to get attention.
- If you talk to soeoe aout their suiidal feeligs, they’re ore likely to attept suiide
(opposite is true!)
- All those who commit suicide are depressed (*When people are most depressed, they are
unmotivated to commit suicide (most people commit suicide when they start to feel a little
better)
- If someone wants to commit suicide, there is no way to stop them
- Biological Factors: Suicide is not hereditary but there is a biological predisposition for certain illnesses
- Psychological Factors: Presence of psychological disorders (depression, schizophrenia, substance abuse)
- Cognitive Factors: Negative attitudes (towards themselves, not others), Hopelessness (best predictor),
Problem-Solving deficits, Restricted Thinking, Rumination (thinking things over and over again)
- Emotional Factors: High levels of negative emotion + difficulty regulating emotions
- Learning Theory: Contagion Effects
- Environmental Factors: Lack of social support, Stress Reactions, Major loss
Warning Signs
- Suicide threats
- Leave Takig ehavior (e.g. will, giving away possessions)
- Sudden improvement in mood* (b/c they made a decision about taking their lives and feel relief)
Preventing Suicide
