Depression
•mood disorder is characterized by disturbances in mood rather than thought !
•if you feel too hight at is mania!
•if you feel too low that is depression!
•unipolar or major depression!
•patient experiences only the despair of depression !
•need to feel that low feeling for 4 weeks!
•10% of men and 20% of women !
•bipolar disorder !
•patient swings from one extreme to the other !
•about 10 episodes of each state during life !
•if untreated each phase could last for months !
•rapid cycle !
•4 or more swings per year !
•mania!
•they are completely off the wall!
•constantly moving thoughts !
•unable to sit still!
•jumps from unbounded elation to intense irritation !
•acute form of bipolar disorder!
•endless tlak !
•no inhibitions!
•grandiose plans (saving world or universe)!
•insomnia !
•ceaseless torrent of activity !
•need to be sedated !
•major depression!
•patient appears utterly dejected , hopeless, worthless!
•will try suicide and want to die !
•may be hallucinations or delusions !
•loss of petite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, little interest in sex and suicide !
•Suicide !
•suicide occurs every 40 seconds!
•in north america it is 1 person every 16.5 minutes or 32000 per year!
•first nations have higher rates of suicide!
•risk for suciide is low while patient is in the worst depression !
•risk increases as patient comes out of depression !
•rates highest on weekend leaves and or shortly after discharge !
•What causes depression?!

•bipolar disorder!
•identical twins have four ties the rate of having it then maternal twins!
•biological parents have a 3 times concordance likely hood then
adoptive!
•Egland et.al looked at gene disorder in Amish population !
•63% developed bipolar disorder!
