Document Summary
Peripheral nervous system: branches out from the cns to all parts of the body, afferent pathways: Neurons that carry signals from the sensory receptor cells to the brain. Efferent pathways: divided into two systems: Somatic nervous system: nerve fibres running to skeletal muscles, control voluntary actions. Autonomic nervous system: controls muscles running to internal organs and glands. Autonomic nervous system: further divided into two systems: Sympathetic division: mobilizing the body"s resources for action. Parasympathetic division: dominates under conditions of relaxation, conserve and replenish body"s energy, decreases heart rate, and blood pressure.
