Document Summary
Influences direction, persistence, and vigor of goal-directed behavior. Inherited predisposition to act in specific, predictable way when encountering a stimulus. Internal physiological equilibrium that the body strives to maintain. Disrupted homeostasis -> drives internal tension -> motivated to act in ways. You want the incentive therefore you do x. Some behaviours can be explained by drive and/or incentive theory. How much you believe a given behavior will actually lead to the goal. Modern cognitive theories also differentiate between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation: Intrinsic: performing an activity because you want to; internal motivation. Extrinsic: motivation to obtain an external reward, or avoid external punishment. Some behaviors can be partially motivated by extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Giving a person an extrinsic reward for something they intrinsically enjoy. Tends to decrease the intrinsic motivation, and also the frequency of the behavior. Especially bad if the extrinsic reward is removed. Conscious control = channels urges into socially- acceptable avenues.
