Libidinal energy: pleasure principle: maximum pleasure, minimum pain. Little or no distinction between fantasy and reality. If needs cannto be met in reality, fantasy will do. Primary process thinking anything can serve the id, it doesn"t have to be real. Id is the dark side of the personality: timeless, without moral constraint, unconscious. Ego means i : needs sometimes delayed, needs sometimes cannot be met, development of ego, derived from and serves id, obeys reality principle, satisfy id in accord with constraints of real world. Over time, the act is suppressed even when id can get away with it: and punishment for non-compliance. Note: difficult position of ego, id and superego are often in conflict. Id and superego are infantile formed when child was young. If ego obeys superego, id is not satisfied. Everything on top of the iceberg is the conscious mind, underneath is the unconscious mind. The larger portion is underwater, where id has the largest portion.
