Document Summary
Festinger using scientific method to find and answer. Hypothesis: tentative statement about a relation between 2 or more events. Theory: collection of hypotheses, an organizing system, more general and elaborate behaviour theory of social learning: human finds copying others, particularly high-status individual, rewarding good theories generate good testable hypotheses. More testable theories are better theories: e. g. theory of relativity, compare: freudian theory, behaviour theory, design and execute the experiment -> variables and control identify variables independent manipulated. We want to say that: independent causes dependent. Without proper control, the experiment is confounded. E. g. larger sample size, higher accuracy: communicate the results. Present a verbal description of results at a convention. Discuss several related experiments in book chapter. To examine causal relations, they use the scientific method. Psychologists are interested in explaining the causes of behaviour. Manipulate iv, measure dv, all extra variables should be controlled. If not, experiment is confounded and experimenter makes a mistake in causal explanation.
