Document Summary

Studies the connections between the brain (physical), and the mind (how we think) Up until a few hundred years ago, the brain was not thought of as important. Humors were thought to be in control of everything. Schizophrenia = chemical imbalance in the brain. Most of his hippocampus was removed in the 1950"s in attempt to stop his seizures. Hm no longer had these seizures, however, he suffered from major memory abilities. Could not have any new memories, could not retain any new information. Hm could still ride a bike, and recognize people who he has known for a while. Therefore, other parts of the brain are responsible for memory too. Three types of brain cells: neuron, interneuron, glial cells. The messenger cells in the brain (sends/receives messages) Release chemicals that allow them to communicate with other neurons/muscles/glands. Send messages by sending electrical impulses that transmit chemical signals. Travels down axon to axon terminals to axon terminal sacs.
