Freud was convinced that it was the unconscious level. It is a disorder in which physical symptoms (paralysis, blindness) appear suddenly and with no apparent physical cause. Under hypnosis, or free association, patients would begin to remember past traumatic events: after remembering, symptoms disappeared or improved remarkably, name and briefly describe freud"s 3 levels of consciousness. Conscious (present awareness: mental events that we are presently aware of, thoughts, perceptions, and other mental events of which we are currently aware. Preconscious (outside awareness but accessible: contains memories, thoughts, feelings, and images that we are unaware of at the moment but that can be called into conscious awareness, think of your 16th birthday . Unconscious is the largest and most important. Id, ego, and superego: briefly describe the roles of each of these structures of personality, in terms of selfish urges, moral values, and practical judgments.
