Document Summary

Superego -> morality, driven by basic do"s and don"ts. At first, the ego only has to worry about external reality. Over time, superego is making demands as well. Superego is beginning to control ego by giving rewards for compliance: pride, punishment for non-compliance guilt. Id and superego are infantile formed when child was young. If ego obeys superego: id may not be satisfied. If ego follows id: superego may punish. Iceberg analogy: under the water is unconscious mind, above the water is conscious mind, id is entirely unconscious, ego has conscious and unconscious part, superego is both conscious and unconscious. Interaction of id, ego and superego results in constant struggle anxiety. Fear of real world threats: neurotic anxiety. Fear of id"s desires: moral anxiety. Anxiety is very unpleasant: avoid or reduce how, if threat is in real world, flee and avoid, rational move by ego more pain than pleasure, ego can manage. For id, thinking and doing are the same.
