Document Summary

Single neuron receives help from other neurons. The neurons near the oval windows are firing rapidly while other neurons on the basilar membrane are barely firing, according to von bekesey, this is interpreted by the individual"s brain as: high pitches sound, low pitches sound. Appears brighter because outside is (-)ve inside becomes (+)ve inhibition. In cortex, response is to slit of light. Cortical cells may be orientation specific and motion sensitive. 3 levels that cells respond to: simple cell: Fires to a slit at a particular orientation on a specific retinal location (has to be on a specific place on screen and specific orientation to respond) Cell will still fire with non optimal orientation but not as much. At one point the cell will stop firing when the orientation differs too much (best response to vertical line) Retinal ganglion cells: form a physical representation of the image (form a line when a line is being shown)
