To avoid troubling thoughts feelings or memories we remove them from our conscious awareness: this may contribute to losing your personality over time, dissociative amnesia. Patient unable to remember specific events, time in life, or identity. More complex: dissociative identity disorder (did) Patient develops 2 or more separate identities that co-exist. Under stress patient switches from one identity to another. At least 2 of these identities recurrently take control of behaviour. 92% female: triggered by sexual abuse before age 5 or 6. Considerable co-morbidity: 90% depression, 70% mood swings, 30% hallucinations, 60% conversion disorder. Alters can be different ages, genders, races, or species. Rare: 200 cases reported until 1980, about 7000 diagnosed in north america currently, 3500% increase since prior to 1980. Shows allergic reaction to orange juice in 11 of the 12 personalities. Extreme physical or sexual abuse triggers it. Patient becomes curious about blackouts and memory lapses.
