Document Summary
Neurons (cid:862)nerve (cid:272)ells(cid:863) arranged in a net(cid:449)ork send/receive electrical signals. Glial cells (cid:862)nurse (cid:272)ells(cid:863) take (cid:272)are of the neurons (and (cid:373)ore! (cid:895) 10x as many (i. e. 1,000 billion = 1 trillion glial cells) Detect stimuli and send signals to the brain (or spinal cord) e. g. rods & (cid:272)ones, pain re(cid:272)eptors, (cid:373)e(cid:272)hanore(cid:272)eptors . Receive messages from other neurons, combine (associate) them, & pass along the response. Kind of like hearing 1000 voices, and condensing the message into something that makes sense. Carry signals from brain (or spinal cord) to muscles, organs. Combines and processes all incoming signals from dendrites. Contains vital cell structures nucleus, dna --> determines cell function. Other structures cellular metabolism (i. e. keep cell alive) Sends out signals (electrical impulses) to other neurons, to muscles, or to glands. 10x as many glial cells as neurons in the brain. During development, they help convey the neurons to the right place. Help form myelin sheath around some neurons" axons.
