Document Summary

Psych 1000: chapter 3 - structure of the nervous system. Peripheral nervous system branches out from the central nervous system to all parts of the body: afferent pathways. Neurons that carry signals from the sensory receptor cells to the brain and spinal cord: efferent pathways. Neurons that carry messages from the brain and spinal cord to effector cells in muscles and glands. Divided into 2 systems: somatic nervous system (red) Controls voluntary actions: autonomic nervous system (blue) Controls muscles running to internal organs & glands. Further divided into 2 systems: sympathetic division. 100 billion at birth, lose 10,000 every day. Three main parts: cell body or soma. Contains biochemical structures needed to keep the neuron alive. Nucleus carries genetic information that determines how the cell develops and functions: dendrites. Branch-like fibres that emerge from the cell body. Collect messages from neighbouring neurons and send them to cell body: axon.
