At first, the ego only has to worry about external reality. Overtime superego is making demands as well. Superego is beginning to control ego by giving rewards for compliance: results in pride. Superego also giving punishment for non-compliance: results in guilt. Note: difficult position for ego: id and superego are often in conflict, id and superego are infantile formed when the child is young. Superego is irrational: if ego obeys superego, Id may not be satisfied: if ego follows id. Ego has a conscious and an unconscious portion. Superego also has a conscious and unconscious portion: unconscious mind the id is entirely unconscious. Cannot consciously be aware of your id motives. Unconscious conflict: interaction of id, ego, and superego, results in constant struggle, this constant interaction leads to anxiety. Unconscious conflict: ego: reality anxiety: fear of real world threats, neurotic anxiety: fear of id"s desires, moral anxiety: fear of guilt.
