Many different types of therapies, depending on the perspective of the therapist. Therapists people often talk to friends, family, physicians, clergy, or self-help group before a professional. Clinical (or counseling) psychologist: ph. d. or psy. D with 5+ years training in different therapeutic/assessment techniques. Psychiatrist: hold a medical degree (m. d. ) Prescribe drugs: also trained in psychotherapeutic techniques. Counsellors: typically, 2+ years training for master"s degree. Psychoanalysis goal of psychoanalysis is to achieve insight: conscious awareness of the psychodynamic forces underlying one"s current issues allows one to adjust behaviour; act accordingly to the current situation, rather than repeating past. Free association client on couch, therapist behind; verbally report all thoughts, feeling, images that enter mind not expected to directly indicate unconscious; rather, look for hesitations/pauses/stopping: suggests nearing a repressive topic. Transference client begins to treat analysis as thought they are someone important from their past: a (redirected) expression of repressed feelings, easier when therapist is behind (out of sight)
