Document Summary
In north america, ethnic minority groups seek mental health services much less: same rate of pathology, but don"t seek treatment, several factors may contribute: cultural norms against turning to mental health professional language barriers. Past experiences of frustration with certain bureaucratic organizations affordability accessibility. Biggest problem: lack of cultural congruence treatment consistent with the patient"s cultural beliefs and expectations i. e. therapists often lack familiarity with any cultural backgrounds other than their own. Ideally want culturally competent therapists: can use knowledge about the client"s culture to achieve broad understanding of client, but don"t over generalize i. e. not only knowledge of culture/customs/etc, but also how the person differs from these. Evidence based practice: essentially, should use treatments that actually have some scientific evidence of success asks the question: does this method of psychotherapy work? : dodo bird verdict: turns out, most methods discussed so far basically work equally well.
