Consider case where person has lost their memory - happens with brain damage. Involve forgetting past or unable to make new memories. Had hippocampus removed - extremely important for memory. People he"s known for decades still had to introduce themselves. Destroyed almost all of hippocampus and areas around it. No information about anything he was doing longer than 20 seconds ago. Does have some remaining long-term memory - his wife and very old friends/family. Expert musician before his illness - continues to play very well. Process that allow us to record and later retrieve experiences and information. Writing down, associating it with other things, saying it outloud. Had subjects look at single words and varied how people encoded them. Found that there"s better recall for items processed more deeply. Gave them a test for all the single words recall goes up, deeper we process it, the better we encode it.
