Self-determination theory: distinguishes between different types of goals and the various reasons or goals that lead to action. In sdt, the most basic distinction is between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. These two types of motivation can lead to different quality of experiences and performance. According to sdt, there are different kinds of extrinsic motivation that vary in the extent to which they are autonomous. Sdt suggests that these different types of motivation can fulfill 3 different psychological needs. Autonomy: experiencing action as free choice without outside influence. Competence: master new challenges or perfect skills. When there is balance among the 3 needs, people experience better psychological outcomes.
