Chapter 5 : somatic symptom, dissociative and factitious disorders. Conditions in which physical symptoms (ie. pain) or concerns about an illness cannot be explained by a medical or psychological disorder: somatic symptom/somatoform and related disorders. The presence of many symptoms that suggest a medical condition, but without a recognized organic basis. Excessive time and energy devoted to these symptoms or health concerns: thinking about it, looking it up on the internet, wanting tests, seeking multiple physicians. Symptoms are distressing or result in significant disruption of daily life. Although any one somatic symptom may not be continuously present, the state of being symptomatic is persistent (typically more than 6 months, has to be long-standing) One symptom may disappear, but another develops continuous: conversion disorder. Pseudo-neurological complaints (not following known neurological patterns) Such as motor or sensory dysfunction, paralysis or blindness, seizures and convulsions.
