Those having abilities that differ from the general public. Behaviours straying from societal norms or standards. Culture = shared patterns differ from another culture. Behaving dangerously that: may result from intense emotional states or signal a psychological disorder, but alone is not necessary or sufficient. Behaviour that interferes with normal daily routines and/or causes significance distress. Approaches to abnormal behaviour (a research hot topic): When is enough enough re: symptoms? and constantly changing in severity over time. Qualitative criteria vs. all or nothing way of thinking. Sex, race or ethnicity: e. g. women more likely to have mood disorders (e. g. anxiety, men more likely to suffer from alcoholic abuse, other addictive behaviours. Downward drift is impairment due to psychological disorder. Development trajectory = symptoms vary by age. Socioeconomic status: children from all ses groups developed disorders at the same rate.
