Jury duty and you- ontario government: how jury duty works in ontario. Some jurors may find they are required for several days: criminal trial. Juror must go to the front and be accepted by each lawyer: can be rejected for no given reason, council can be allowed to ask questions to decide they will respond to the case without prejudice or bias. Jury system is the foundation of the justice system: separates our democracy from many other systems in the world. Summary: less serious offences, heard by judge alone, ex. Indictable: highly serious offences heard by judge and jury, ex. Treason, murder, piracy: hybrid, cross between, max sentence 5+ years if proceeded by indictment, max 6 month if summary, crown gets to choose. In some cases, crown or defense may challenge the composition of the jury: ex. Jury was all white and chose not guilty of murder, no aboriginals on jury.
