Cases heard by juries: differs depending on provinces and territories (and by country) In some options = defendants are given a choice between a jury trial or being judged alone: 3 different types of offenses in canada: Summary: do(cid:374)"t (cid:396)e(cid:395)ui(cid:396)e a judge to (cid:271)e p(cid:396)ese(cid:374)t: someone stealing something, breach of probation, sentence fewer than 6 months, fine is less than , max sentence could be 18 months. Indictable: highly serious offense: theft heard by a judge alone. Treason, murder, piracy tried by judge and jury. Hybrid: a cross between summary and indictable: crown decides how they will proceed with this case either summary or indictable.
