In his practice, he came in contact with patients who were suffering from hysteria: they had unusual symptoms (i. e. suddenly becoming blind or paralyzed) but there was no physical basis for these symptoms. Example glove anesthesia (glove paralysis) when the patient loses all feeling in the hand from the wrist down, however, the way nerves are distributed in the hand, this is physiologically impossible.
