Health promotion: strategies intended to maintain or improve the health of large populations: health promotion takes many forms from smoking-cessation programs to patient education, public awareness campaigns, and political activism, health promotion is undertaken by the federal government. It is also practiced at an international level. Its categories sum up what health promotion is all about locus of responsibility for health rests with the individual rather than on medical staff or medical facilities: self care and mutual aid also emphasized as health promotion mechanisms. In other words, one goal of health promotion is to encourage people to look after themselves. Ex. a community might develop a program to help people recover from heart attacks or devote funding to finding a cure for cancer: public health the orientation is behavior based and the goal is disease prevention. Ex. promotion of safe sex, or anti-drinking-and-driving programs: socioenvironmental the orientation is towards social change and healthy public policy.
