Kanner believed that this unusual group of characteristics constituted a pathogenic syndrome: called it early infantile autism. Autism spectrum disorder = group of neurodevelopmental disorders marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, and by restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests. Autism = developmental disability affecting verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction.
