Richard simpson: in spite of significant advancements in treating and understanding those with asd, the disability remains a mystery. Condition was not described or named until 1943, by leo kanner: published case reports about a group of 11 children, these children displayed behaviours that were different from anything he had seen so far. Kanner believed that this unusual group of characteristics constituted a pathogenic syndrome: called it early infantile autism. Autism spectrum disorder = group of neurodevelopmental disorders marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, and by restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests. Autism = developmental disability affecting verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction.
