However, the term severe disabilities often includes many individuals who score in the moderate level of intellectual disabilities (iq scores of 40-55) Special educators emphasize that a student with severe disabilities, regardless of age, is one who needs instruction in basic skills that most children without disabilities acquire in the first 5 yrs of life.
