Psychology 2080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Outline Of Object Recognition, Mcgurk Effect, Connectionism
Document Summary
There is not a deiniive theory, and theories can complement each other to give us a bigger picture: template matching. Object recogniion is accomplished by comparing the simulus that you are looking at to a stored set of templates. The brain stores mental copies of environmental simuli, and objects that we see are compared to those templates eg. the leter t has two lines that intersect at right angles. If you see a simulus that its that template, it is the leter t: the problem is that there are a lot of variaions (eg. font types, handwriing diferences) Recognizing disincive features in an object eg. the leter t has a horizontal line on top of a verical line. Things can change form and look diferent from diferent angles. We are able to shut of" certain feature detectors when we are looking for something: eg. rounded vs. angular features.
